John was eager to participate at 548 West 22nd Street, for example, in the X Initiative's last days, billed as "BYOA", where he taped to its 27-hour-long walls nine examples of the adhesive paper graffiti he had been putting up throughout the Chelsea district of Manhattan during the previous year. "BYOA" was inspired by Walter Hoppsí experimental "Thirty-Six Hours", an event that the legendary curator organized in Washington, DC in 1978. (X Initiative, an experimental program for contemporary art, was founded by Elizabeth Dee and directed by Cecilia Alemani, and ran from March 2009 to February 6th, 2010.)
